This will be the third time NRG Stadium hosts the NCAA Final Four, previously hosting in 2011 and 2016, and the fourth time for Houston, with the first one held at the Astrodome in 1971. The NCAA Men’s Division 1 Basketball Tournament 2023 kicks off with the First Four games on March 14–15 in Dayton, Ohio. Selection Sunday is on March 12, 2023, and the championship match is scheduled for April 3, 2023. This year, 68 teams will compete, with 32 automatic bids given to conference tournament winners.
The remaining 36 bids are “at large”, chosen by the NCAA Selection Committee. The committee will also seed all 68 teams from 1 to 68. Eight teams, including the four seeded automatic qualifiers and the four lowest-seeded at-large teams, play in the First 4. The winners move on to the main tournament bracket.
